What Are Negative Ions?
An ion is an electrically charged atom or molecule. Atoms are everywhere and they can be positively or negatively charged – which means they can be positive or negative ions. In nature, there are positively charged ions and negatively charged ions. These molecules have powerful effects on human biology, but depending on which kind, the effects can be highly negative or highly positive. Negative ions, specifically negatively-charged oxygen molecules (different than ozone), have been shown to have beneficial effects on human health.
Negative ions are odourless, tasteless, and invisible molecules that we inhale in certain environments – particularly humid ones like rainforests, near waterfalls, beaches and after a rainfall. Positive ions are found in high concentrations in areas with high outdoor air pollution (like cities). Sitting in traffic is a great way to get a large dose of positive ions. Studies have shown positive ions can inhibit ciliary motility (the cleaning mechanism in our respiratory tract), increasing the risk of infection. They can typically leave us fatigued, irritable or even depressed.
Do you know the feeling of lying on a beach all day and then feeling exhausted? If you ever asked yourself how doing nothing all day can get you so tired, we have the answer: in nature, positive ions come from the sun’s UV rays and positive ions drain our energy. Also in our daily life, we also absorb harmful positive ions from computers, cell phones, fluorescent lights, and machinery.
On the other hand, think about how great the air feels just after a thunderstorm or when you’re standing next to a waterfall? That smell, that feeling are the effects of negative ions that fill the atmosphere. We notice and enjoy them! Negative ions are thought to have a positive effect on our psyche, our sense of well-being… and perhaps even our sense of happiness. Negative ions manifest from nature… rain, trees, grasses, and minerals all contain helpful negative ion properties.
It is thought that Negative Ions counteract and balance the effects of positive ions. The Aarogyam Energy Pendants contains the natural, negative ion producing mineral tourmaline
Why Are Negative Ions Beneficials?
Once they reach our bloodstream, negative ions are believed to produce biochemical reactions that increase levels of serotonin – helping boost mood, relieve stress, and increase waking energy. In fact, Columbia University studies of people with winter and chronic depression show that supplementing negative ions relieves depression as much as antidepressants. According to Pierce J. Howard, PhD, Director of Research at the Center for Applied Cognitive Sciences in Charlotte, N.C., negative ions increase the flow of oxygen to the brain – resulting in higher alertness, decreased drowsiness, and more mental energy.
Some studies suggest that continuous exposure to negative ions is an effective treatment against Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). Read more about these studies on our post “SAD and the Benefits of Negative Ion Therapy.”
During strenuous exercise, the body produces lactic acid which is positively charged. There are some sports medicine experts who believe that by introducing negative ions to the body recovery time may be shortened.
Those performing regular workout routines, men's sports, and women's sports from skateboarding, biking, all sports… even trail running…. have reported a higher level of focus and performance!
Many people believe in the beneficial effects of Negative Ions. We, at Aarogyam Energy Jewellery, make no medical claims with regards to negative ions. We only offer the user a way to experience and judge for themselves the benefits and effects of this new technology.
"They also may make your immune system strong to protect against germs in the air, resulting in decreased irritation due to inhaling various particles that make you sneeze, cough, or have a throat irritation. Strong immune system may also help fight Radiations and other chronic diseases"
Historic Uses Of Negative Ion Therapy
It’s believed by some that negative ion bracelets balance your electromagnetic currents when you wear them. Changing electromagnetic currents in the body or immediate surroundings has, for hundreds of years, been part of several Asian religious or spiritual traditions believed to facilitate healing. Acupuncture is designed to alter energy currents or "chi" in the body. Being in close contact with energy-charged magnets, metals or crystals is also linked to several alternative-healing practices. Indian yogi Paramahansa Yogananda promoted meditation on a wool blanket so as to be less affected by the Earth's electromagnetic fields. Yogananda also promoted the use of a bracelet containing gold, silver and copper for balancing the body's currents.
